Middlemount Township

Middlemount, 25 kilometres north–east of the Capcoal Mines, was purpose built to service the German Creek Mines. The town is also home to employees and families of other nearby mines including the Foxleigh Mine.

With a population of 2800, Middlemount is a progressive regional centre with a variety of amenities and sporting facilities to meet the needs of a predominantly youthful community. The town has health, social and educational facilities including preschool to tertiary entrance level schools, a community day care centre and a kindergarten.

Middlemount is 1.5 hours by road from the major regional centre of Emerald and 2.5 hours from Rockhampton and the coastal city of Mackay and nearby Whitsunday Islands.

Community Involvement

Capcoal maintains a regular informational program for the local community and actively supports initiatives that foster and assist development of community projects.

The company strives to develop an understanding of its operations and planning processes within the community.

Upcoming Community Consultation Activities – seeking your involvement

Capcoal are planning a range of consultation activities with the local community over the next 6 months. Capcoal want to understand and work towards addressing any community impacts from its current expansion and other issues that may be of concern to the community (eg. residents, government, businesses etc.).

Some of the upcoming consultation activities include:

• Telephone survey of residents in Middlemount (starting in August 2006)
• One-on-one meetings with key stakeholders (over August and September 2006).
• Stakeholder Forum (proposed for November 2006).

Capcoal encourages the participation of all those interested in the future of Middlemount and the surrounding area. The aim of these consultation activities is to better understand the community’s views in relation to a range of social and economic issues.

The findings of this community consultation process will be reported back to the community in the form of a public presentation as well as a public document.

Capcoal have engaged an external consultant to ensure the process is as independent and comprehensive as possible. Environmental Resources Management (ERM) will be assisting Capcoal with the upcoming consultation activities.
